Hemsedal Ski Resort

Hemsedal ski resort is one of Norway's most popular winter destinations. Hemsedal is located in the Norwegian mountains a few hours from both Oslo and Bergen. Hemsedal offers 51 alpine ski slopes and 24 lifts taking you up into the mountains. Hemsedal ski resort have several snow parks for snowboarding and skiing with jumps and more.

During the weekends Hemsedal is a particular popular destination for young adults and teens.

Lifts and slopes at Hemsedal ski resort are operated by SkiStar who also run other winter destinations including Trysil ski resort as well as Sälen and Åre ski resorts in Sweden.

Several ski schools at Hemsedal offer training for both children and adults at all skill levels. Courses run from Mondays to Thursdays. Alternatively you can book a private instructor by the hour. If you do not want to bring your own ski equipment, you can rent skis, boots, poles, snowboards and helmets in Hemsedal.

Tracks for Nordic skiing are available both in the Hemsedal valley (120 km) and on the mountains (90 km). You can rent boots, skis and poles for cross country skiing in Hemsedal.

Hemsedal ski resort is located at 900 meters above the sea. Totten in Hemsedal, the highest ski slope in Norway, start at 1450 meters.

Hemsedal is situated close to the Geilo ski resort which is another top Norwegian ski destination.

Traveling to Hemsedal ski resort

You can travel through Oslo or Bergen to reach Hemsedal. You can also travel by plane to Rygge or Torp Airports south of Oslo or by boat to Larvik, before continuing to Hemsedal. Here is a more detailed explanation of some of your travel options for reaching this ski resort.

By Ryanair, Wizz Air or Norwegian to Torp or Rygge airports

The low cost airlines Ryanair, Wizz Air and Norwegian operate flights from many places in Europe to two airports located south of Oslo: Torp Airport Sandefjord and Rygge Airport Moss. Torp airport is the one of these airports closest to Hemsedal ski resort.

There are railway stations close to both Torp and Rygge airports with free shuttle buses available to the train station. NSB operate rail service from these railway stations to Gol which is close to Hemsedal ski resort. If you travel from Rygge airport, you will have to change trains at Oslo central station. If you travel from Torp airport, you will have to change trains at Drammen station.

By flight to Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport Gardermoen is the Norwegian airport with the most international flights. The airport is located just north of the city of Oslo. Major airlines like SAS, British Airways, KLM, Air France, United Airlines, Qatar Airlines and Lufthansa operate daily flights into Oslo Airport.

From Oslo Airport you can travel by train to Gol which is close to Hemsedal ski resort. There is a train station at the airport. You will have to change trains at the Oslo central station on your way to Hemsedal. From Gol railway station there is a local bus to Hemsedal ski resort. There is a bus from Gol to Hemsedal corresponding with all trains arriving from Oslo. The travel time from Gol railway station to Hemsedal is around 45 minutes.

By flight to Bergen Airport

KLM, SAS, Air Berlin and Lufthansa are some of the airlines operating international flights into Bergen Airport.

From Bergen Airport you can transfer to Bergen railway station by traveling on the airport express coach. Frequent departures.

From Bergen you can travel by direct train to Gol. From Gol there is a bus service to Hemsedal. Buses are departing shortly after train arrival at Gol.

By scheduled flight to Fagernes airport

Fagernes Airport is located around 1 hour 15 minutes driving time from Hemsedal ski resort.

The airline Air Norway operates two flights per day from Oslo Airport Gardermoen to Fagernes Monday to Friday, and once per day on Sundays. There is no direct public transport service between Fagernes airport and Hemsedal ski resort. If you arrive with the morning flight, you can travel by bus to Hemsedal but will have to change transport at Fagernes and then at Gol in order to reach Hemsedal. By train from Oslo or Bergen

Hemsedal is situated about 45 minutes away from the Gol railway station on the rail line between Oslo and Bergen. NSB operates four trains per day from Oslo and Bergen to Gol including a night train. From Oslo to Gol the train travel time is around 3 hours and from Bergen to Gol the travel time is around 3 hours 40 minutes.

By car from Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands

If you are driving to Hemsedal ski resort from Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands, you may find that the best way to get to Hemsedal is to cross by ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Larvik and then drive on to Hemsedal.

Safety tip: If you plan to drive your own car in Norway during the winter season, keep in mind that roads will often be covered in ice and snow. Your car must be equipped with winter tyres to be safe and legal to drive in Norway during the winter. Snow tyres sold in many European countries may not be well suited for driving in Norway during the winter season.

From Hirtshals in northern Denmark, Color Line operates a twice daily ferry link to Larvik in south-eastern Norway. The crossing time is around four hours. This is the fastest ferry crossing for traveling from Denmark to Hemsedal ski resort. From Larvik to Hemsedal the driving time is around 4 hours.

You may also choose to drive along the Swedish west coast to enter Norway. The driving time from Malmø in southern Sweden to Oslo is six to seven hours.

Driving from Larvik to Hemsedal ski resort

The drive from Larvik to Hemsedal is mostly on relatively good quality roads. You will however need a map or a car navigation system to guide you. The driving time is around 4 hours and the distance is 290 km.

Driving from Oslo to Hemsedal ski resort

Exit Oslo to the west on E18. Just outside Oslo go north-east on E16 and then outside Hønefoss continue north-east on national road 7 (RV7). Stay on this road until you reach Gol and then exit onto national road 52. This road will take you the final 45 minutes to Hemsedal ski resort. The driving time from Oslo to Hemsedal is around 3 hours 45 minutes and the distance is 220 km.
