Geilo is a family friendly ski resort with 40 alpine ski slopes and 20 lifts taking you up into the mountains. Geilo have several snow parks for snowboarding and skiing with jumps, boxes and butterboxes. For those interested in Nordic skiing, Geilo ski resort offers 220 km of groomed cross country skiing tracks.
For families with small children, Geilo have special areas reserved for children to play both outdoors and indoors under adult supervision. Children under the age of seven get ski passes for free.
Several ski schools at Geilo offer training for all ages and skill levels. Courses run from Mondays to Thursdays. Alternatively you can book a private instructor by the hour.
If you do not want to bring your own ski equipment, you can rent skis, boots and poles both for alpine and cross country skiing. Snowboards and helmets are also available for rent.
The Geilo ski resort is located at 800 meters above the sea and can be reached both by private car and various forms of public transport.
Geilo is situated close to the Hemsedal ski resort which is another top Norwegian ski destination. Hemsedal is perhaps catering for a younger crowd than Geilo, especially during the weekends.
Traveling to Geilo ski resort
Most people will either travel through the Oslo area or through the Bergen area on their way to Geilo. Here is a more detailed explanation of some of your travel options for reaching this ski resort.
By Ryanair, Wizz Air or Norwegian to Torp or Rygge airports
The low cost airlines Ryanair, Wizz Air and Norwegian operate flights from many places in Europe to two airports located south of Oslo: Torp Airport Sandefjord and Rygge Airport Moss. Torp airport is the one of these airports closest to Geilo ski resort.
There are railway stations close to both Torp and Rygge airports with free shuttle buses available to the train station. NSB operate rail service from these railway stations to Geilo ski resort. If you travel from Rygge airport, you will have to change trains at Oslo central station. If you travel from Torp airport, you will have to change trains at Drammen station.

By flight to Oslo Airport
Oslo Airport Gardermoen is the Norwegian airport with the most international flights. The airport is located just north of the city of Oslo. Major airlines like SAS, British Airways, KLM, United Airlines, Qatar Airlines and Lufthansa operate daily flights into Oslo Airport.
From Oslo Airport you can travel by train to Geilo ski resort. There is a train station at the airport. You will have to change trains at the Oslo central station on your way to Geilo.
All the major international car rental companies are present at Oslo Airport.
The driving time from Oslo airport to Geilo is around 4 hours 15 minutes.
From Oslo Bus Terminal Nettbuss operate a twice daily coach service to Geilo. The bus terminal is located next to the Oslo central railway station. There are trains running between the airport and the central station, and a cheaper airport express bus running between the airport and the bus terminal.
By flight to Bergen Airport
KLM, SAS, Air Berlin and Lufthansa are some of the airlines operating international flights into Bergen Airport.
From Bergen Airport you can transfer to Bergen railway station by way of the airport express coach which run frequently between the airport and the railway station.
From Bergen you can travel by direct train to Geilo ski resort.
All the major international car rental companies are present at Bergen Airport.
The driving time from Bergen airport to Geilo is around 4 hours 15 minutes.
By scheduled flight to Fagernes airport
Fagernes Airport is located about 1 hour 45 minutes driving time from Geilo ski resort.
The airline Air Norway operates two flights per day from Oslo Airport Gardermoen to Fagernes Monday to Friday, and once per day on Sundays. There are no direct public transport service between Fagernes airport and Geilo ski resort. If you arrive with the morning flight, you can travel by bus to Geilo but will have to change transport at Fagernes and then at Gol in order to reach Geilo. By train from Oslo or Bergen
Geilo is situated on the rail line between Oslo and Bergen. NSB operates four trains per day from Oslo and Bergen to Geilo ski resort including a night train. From Oslo to Geilo the train travel time is around 3.5 hours and from Bergen to Geilo the travel time is around 3 hours.
By car from Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands
If you are driving to Geilo ski resort from Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands, you may find that the best way to get to Geilo is to cross by ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Larvik and then drive on to Geilo.
From Hirtshals in northern Denmark, Color Line operates a twice daily ferry link to Larvik in south-eastern Norway. The crossing time is around four hours. This is the shortest ferry crossing for traveling from Denmark to Geilo ski resort. From Larvik to Geilo the driving time is around 4.5 hours.
Other options for ferry travel from Denmark or Germany to Oslo are:
- From Copenhagen DFDS operate an over-night ferry service to Oslo arriving early in the morning.
- From Fredrikshavn in northern Denmark, Stena Line operates a ferry service to Oslo. This is a day-sailing when traveling from Fredrikshavn to Oslo, and a night sailing with cabin reservation necessary when traveling from Oslo to Fredrikshavn. Arrival time in Oslo is in the late afternoon.
- From Kiel in northern Germany, Color Line operates an over-night ferry service to Oslo. Arrival time in Oslo is 10 in the morning.
You may also choose to drive along the Swedish west coast to enter Norway. The driving time from Malmø in southern Sweden to Oslo is six to seven hours.
Driving from Larvik to Geilo ski resort
To drive from Larvik to the Geilo ski resort follow road 40 north from Larvik. Stay on road 40 until you reach Geilo. The driving time is around 4.5 hours and the distance is 255 km.
Driving from Oslo to Geilo ski resort
Exit Oslo to the west on E18. Just outside Oslo go north-east on E16 and then outside Hønefoss continue north-east on national road 7 (RV7). Stay on this road until you arrive at Geilo. The driving time from Oslo to Geilo is around 4 hours 45 minutes and the distance is 240 km.
